PGY1 Pharmacy San Francisco, California

The PGY1 Residency Program at Kaiser San Francisco follows guidelines set by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and provides thorough training in a variety of specialties.

The purpose of the Kaiser Permanente, San Francisco PGY1 pharmacy residency program is to prepare pharmacist clinicians for inpatient, ambulatory care and outpatient positions.

PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Pharmacy Services

The Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Pharmacy Department aims to improve the health of our members and the communities we serve by providing high quality, evidence-based, and affordable pharmaceutical care. Our pharmacy services are comprised of 5 outpatient pharmacies, 1 inpatient pharmacy, 1 infusion center pharmacy, and staffed by over 220 exceptional pharmacy employees. We provide pharmacy services in acute care, outpatient, and ambulatory care settings. Our inpatient and outpatient pharmaceutical care services are provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Our ambulatory care pharmacists practice in a variety of clinics which include adult and family medicine, anticoagulation/direct oral anticoagulants, asthma, chronic pain, addiction medicine and recovery services, heart failure, HIV care and prevention, hospice, oncology/infusion center, Preventing Heart Attacks and Stroke Everyday (PHASE), psychiatry, and national specialty pharmacy. Our ambulatory care pharmacists work under collaborative practice agreements in these various clinics to manage their own patients by initiating, adjusting, and discontinuing medication therapy as clinically appropriate. The outpatient pharmacists work at the height of their licensure by ensuring the safe dispensing and appropriate use of medications and counseling patients. Our inpatient pharmacy clinical services include ICU, emergency medicine, pediatrics/NICU, home infusion, and internal medicine. The inpatient pharmacists’ clinical activities include but are not limited to multidisciplinary rounding, medication monitoring, renal monitoring, antimicrobial stewardship, and pharmacy managed protocols.
