PGY1 Pharmacy South Sacramento, California

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and provides broad training across inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory care pharmacy services.

The program is based within the Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento service area, which includes the South Sacramento Medical Center and medical offices throughout South Sacramento and Elk Grove. The service area cares for a diverse population of approximately 236,000 members. Its 275-bed medical center is a designated Level II Trauma Center and offers a wide range of primary care, specialty, hospital, surgical, and outpatient services. As part of Kaiser Permanente’s integrated health care system, residents have the opportunity to learn in an environment where physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and other health care professionals work together to coordinate patient care.

Established in 2008, the program is a one-year postgraduate training program that builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and helps residents strengthen their clinical judgment and confidence in caring for patients with a wide range of conditions. Residents complete required learning experiences in ambulatory care, inpatient and outpatient pharmacy practice, drug utilization management, and pharmacy administration. Elective experiences allow residents to further explore areas that align with their professional interests. Upon completion, residents will be eligible for board certification and postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Pharmacy Services

The South Sacramento Pharmacy Department provides inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory care pharmacy services in a supportive learning environment for residents, students, and interns. Outpatient pharmacists provide medication review and patient counseling, while inpatient pharmacists work alongside physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals to manage and monitor medication therapy. Inpatient pharmacists manage vancomycin, warfarin, aminoglycosides, and renal dose adjustments under pharmacy protocols and provide TPN management in collaboration with the treating physician. Ambulatory care pharmacists manage patients under collaborative practice protocols across clinical areas including cardiovascular risk reduction (@Goal), chronic pain, psychiatry, HIV, oncology, and Medicaid care coordination. The department also supports drug utilization management, medication safety, and quality improvement throughout the service area.

Requirements for Acceptance

• Must be licensed as an Intern Pharmacist in the state of California by the first day of residency program.
• Resident must be a licensed California pharmacist within 120 days from the program start date. Residents who are not licensed as a pharmacist within 120 days from the program start date will have their term of appointment extended by the number of days the resident is without licensure past the 120-day deadline up to a maximum of 45 days. Failure to obtain a California state pharmacist license within 165 days from the program start date will result in the resident being dismissed from the program and employment will be terminated.
• To be eligible for pharmacist licensure, candidates must be graduates or candidates for graduation from an ACPE accredited degree program (or one in the process of pursuing accreditation) or have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the NABP.
