PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration & Leadership Downey, California

Our specialty residency is an ASHP Accredited Postgraduate Year 2 (PGY2) in Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership. The program offers leadership, mentorship, and management experience at one of the larger Southern California medical centers. The core learning experiences for the resident will revolve around the three pharmacy service line programs in ambulatory care, inpatient, and outpatient. The resident will also have a year long longitudinal learning experience with the Area Pharmacy Director, who also serves as the RPD.

The purpose of our residency program is to provide the resident with advanced leadership experience and training to improve the health of our communities with a personal touch through the delivery of pharmaceutical care in an integrated healthcare model.

The pharmacy resident will receive training and experience in various pharmacy management activities, including but not limited to:

  • Development of an executive leadership style and presence
  • Exposure to operational aspects of multiple pharmacy service lines
  • Independent oversight of multiple pharmacy operations
  • Individualized, longitudinal mentoring by Southern California Pharmacy Operations Leader, Area Pharmacy Director, and pharmacy managers in various practice settings.
  • Management of multiple projects in addition to the Western States Conference project
  • Human Resource and Personnel Management Experience
  • Overview of principles of fiscal accountability
  • Understanding the dynamics of a collaborative workforce
  • Expansion of systems thinking
  • Understanding basic business requirements, including external regulatory requirements by The Joint Commission (TJC), Board of Pharmacy (BOP), California Department of Public Health (CDPH), etc.
  • Facilitation of various area meetings including the Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) and Area Team Management (ATM) meetings, etc.
  • Exposure to Southern California Regional departments, teams, and management meetings with Executive leadership at the national, regional and local levels.
  • Participation in team building activities by understanding various relationship factors
  • Promotion of healthcare with leading edge innovative ideas and systems

Pharmacy Services

Our medical center provides acute care, ambulatory care, and outpatient pharmacy services to our members. The Downey Medical Center is a 424 licensed bed facility that includes a 63 bed ED unit, 49 bed NICU, and a cardio cath lab. The inpatient pharmacy services include antimicrobial stewardship, clinical monitoring (aminoglycoside, renal, and vancomycin), critical care, emergency department, home infusion liaison, and neonatal and pediatric intensive care units. The ambulatory care pharmacy supports various pharmacist-managed clinical services, including Anticoagulation, Asthma, CVD Management, Depression Care Management, Heart Failure, Hepatitis C, HIV, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Infusion/Oncology, Medication Therapy Management, New Member Program, Pediatric Oncology, Psoriasis, Renal Management, and Rheumatoid Disease. Our eight outpatient pharmacies provide our members with prescription services and clinical monitoring. Our pharmacy operations provides services for COVID-19 therapeutics, medication adherence, and Advanced Medical Care At Home (AMCAH) for our members and our community.

The pharmacy department prides itself on being progressive and innovative in the delivery of pharmaceutical care. In addition to providing excellent pharmacy services to our members, Kaiser Permanente supports the profession of pharmacy via active involvement in professional organizations, community service, and providing an interactive mentorship with pharmacy students through various programs. Pharmacists take an active role in numerous committees such as quality, infectious disease, medication safety, drug utilization, pharmacy & therapeutics (P&T), and more.

Our residency provides a unique opportunity for the resident to be involved in many aspects of an organized health care delivery system with an emphasis on preventative care. The goal is to help each participant understand how all components are integrated in order to provide our members with quality, affordable health care. Residents will be exposed to various areas of practice and will have many learning opportunities.

Requirements for Acceptance

  • Must have completed an ASHP accredited or candidate-status PGY1 residency prior to start of program.
  • Must be licensed as an Intern Pharmacist in the state of California by the first day of residency program if not already licensed as a pharmacist in California
  • Resident must be a licensed California pharmacist within 120 days from the program start date. Residents who are not licensed as a pharmacist within 120 days from the program start date will have their term of appointment extended by the number of days the resident is without licensure past the 120-day deadline up to a maximum of 45 days. Failure to obtain a California state pharmacist license within 165 days from the program start date will result in the resident being dismissed from the program and employment will be terminated.
  • To be eligible for pharmacist licensure, candidates must be graduates or candidates for graduation from an ACPE accredited degree program (or one in the process of pursuing accreditation) or have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the NABP.
