This ASHP-accredited PGY2 oncology pharmacy residency program at Kaiser Permanente, San Diego is designed to advance the resident’s leadership qualities and the clinical knowledge needed for a complete pharmaceutical care to patients with cancer in the inpatient or ambulatory care setting. Pharmacists completing the residency program will be proficient in drug therapy management and medication education as members of an integrated health care team and be prepared to apply for a clinical pharmacy specialist position in a variety of oncology care practice settings. The oncology pharmacist resident will be involved with drug therapy management as a member of the care team and exercise skills in educating others regarding hematology/oncology medication management. Previous past residents have moved onto positions such as clinical oncology pharmacist, oncology pharmacy supervisor, oncology pharmacy research analyst, inpatient pharmacy director, and others.
Pharmacy Services
KP San Diego includes three hospitals (San Diego Medical Center, San Marcos Medical Center, and Zion Medical Center), 23 medical offices, 19 outpatient pharmacies, 20 ambulatory care pharmacy services including 2 oncology pharmacies, and 1 home infusion pharmacy – this area provides a wide range of medical services and specialty clinics.
The two oncology pharmacies are located at San Marcos medical office building and Zion Medical center. The San Marcos infusion clinic treats approximately 30-40 outpatient patients daily, with 4 oncologists, 2 oncology pharmacists, and 2-3 pharmacy technicians. Zion Medical center infusion clinic treats both outpatient and inpatient approximately 70-80 patients daily with 12 oncologists, 10-11 oncology pharmacists (of which 4-5 working remotely), and 6 pharmacy technicians. Oncology pharmacy clinics and protocols include SCAL regional oncology pharmacy research, oral chemotherapy management, antiemetic, and epoetin clinics. The KPSD oncology pharmacy team is a hub for oral chemotherapy patients located in San Diego, Baldwin Park, and South Bay, with an approximate census of 900 patients.

Requirements for Acceptance
- Must have completed an ASHP accredited or candidate-status PGY1 residency a prior to start of program.
- Must be licensed as an Intern Pharmacist in the state of California by the first day of residency program if not already licensed as a pharmacist in California.
- Resident must be a licensed California pharmacist within 120 days from the program start date. Residents who are not licensed as a pharmacist within 120 days from the program start date will have their term of appointment extended by the number of days the resident is without licensure past the 120-day deadline up to a maximum of 45 days. Failure to obtain a California state pharmacist license within 165 days from the program start date will result in the resident being dismissed from the program and employment will be terminated.
- To be eligible for pharmacist licensure, candidates must be graduates or candidates for graduation from an ACPE accredited degree program (or one in the process of pursuing accreditation) or have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the NABP.
