PGY1 Pharmacy East Bay (Alameda, Berkeley, Oakland, Richmond, Pinole), California
Founded in 1945, Kaiser Permanente is America’s leading integrated health plan. The Kaiser Permanente East Bay Area consists of two medical centers with associated hospitals and medical offices in Oakland and Richmond, and satellite medical offices in Alameda, Berkeley, and Pinole. Here, we proudly serve a diverse population of over 350,000 patients. Located in beautiful Oakland, CA, the Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center (OMC) is the flagship for Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and houses a 349-bed tertiary care teaching hospital. The new State of the Art Kaiser Oakland Medical Center opened in July 2014. We also opened the first ever farmer’s market that continues to be successful.
The East Bay (EB) Department of Pharmacy provides services in the acute care, outpatient, ambulatory care, drug education, and administration settings. Inpatient and outpatient pharmaceutical care services are provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Pharmacists participate in a wide range of clinical activities. In the ambulatory care setting, we provide services in anticoagulation, primary care, asthma, psychiatry, hospice, drug use management and oncology. In the acute care setting, we provide services in pediatrics, infectious diseases and critical care. Our service area provides many outstanding opportunities for pharmacists to practice in collaboration with physicians, nurses, and other professionals under an integrated healthcare model. In addition, we have state of the art technology including CPOE, eMAR, bedside barcoding, and electronic medical record (EMR) program that integrates both acute care and ambulatory care settings.
Pharmacy Services
The purpose of the Pharmacy Residency Program at Kaiser Permanente East Bay Area is to train pharmacy residents to perform at the highest level as clinical pharmacists in a collaborative environment. After successful completion of our Pharmacy Residency Program, our residents will possess the skills needed to qualify for positions in virtually any practice setting including Inpatient, Outpatient and Ambulatory Care Pharmacies, industry, research, drug information, or further training in a PGY2 Residency Program. Residents will be able to independently function in multiple health care environments, deliver pharmaceutical care to patients with a variety of disease states, and provide life-long contributions to the pharmacy profession. They will be trained to sharpen their communication, medication therapy management, and medical informatics skills.
Residents will also enhance their project management, practice management, and leadership skills through active participation in P&T and MUE committees. In addition, residents will participate in regional pharmacy trainings, precept students and conduct a year-long research project. Residents will gain an appreciation of related issues such as cultural competency, diversity, and cost-effective drug therapy management. At Kaiser Permanente East Bay, we aspire to train residents to become leaders committed to providing quality pharmaceutical care to the public and advancing the profession of pharmacy in the changing health care environment.
